SplendorQuest: Independence Day

This is indicative of nothing. I saw John Prine live the other night and I'm of a mind to write something about writing country songs. Of a mind, but not of the time. So instead, for now, I'm posting this. This is fun, not art. The joy in it for me is piling all those syllables into the scansion and making it work. Up tempo country, a race with a Telecaster.
when the hammer finally dropped it surprised precisely no one but him
her kids were hanging upside down just waiting for the end to begin
and she swore she coulda took it but she never had to take it
        on that hopelessly dignified chin
good riddance to bad rubbish in america the good guys always win

a shamed repatriation is the aftermath of independence day
a look of faked defiance is the camouflage of rancorous dismay
and there's a sad and stupid silence as they bite their tongues to hold in
everything no one should ever have to say
good riddance to bad rubbish he didn't want it any other way

every day's a new beginning a new chance to make it better than the last
every sparkling drop of water isn't tainted by the poisons of the past
she'll dig through her secret wardrobe to admire what he could never see
she'll see herself reflected in the glass
good riddance to bad rubbish independence day has come at last
