How Grey scatted the cat

by Greg Swann

One day Grey was playing outside by herself. She and Mommy had been playing together, but Mommy had to go inside to fix lunch. Grey was singing softly to herself and smiling in the sun when all at once a big, mean cat sauntered up the walk.

"Hssss!," the cat hissed.

"Pffat! Pffat! Pffat!," spat the big, mean cat.

"Rrrowl!," it growled.

The cat was VERY mean and Grey was VERY scared.

She didn't know what to do, so she called, "Mommy! Can you please come help me?"

But Mommy couldn't hear.

"Mo-OM-my!," she called. "Can you please come help me?"

But Mommy couldn't hear.

"Hssss!," the cat hissed, and Grey called, "Daddy! Can you please come help me?"

But Daddy couldn't hear.

"Da-AD-dy!," she called. "Can you please come help me?"

But Daddy couldn't hear.

"Pffat! Pffat! Pffat!," the cat spat, so Grey called, "Dyllan! Can you please come help me?"

But her big sister Dyllan couldn't hear.

"Dy-YLL-an!," she called. "Can you please come help me?"

But Dyllan couldn't hear.

And "Rrrowl! Rrrowl!," that big, mean cat growled.

Grey was SO scared and she didn't know what to do.

But then she said to herself, "I guess I'm just going to have to solve my own problem."

So she got down on her hands and knees and she gave that cat a mean look.

"Hssss!," she hissed.

And "Hssss!," the cat hissed back.

"Pffat! Pffat! Pffat!," little Grey spat at that big, mean cat.

And "Pffat! Pffat! Pffat!," spat the big, mean cat.

"Rrrowl!," Grey growled.

And "Rrrowl!," the cat growled.

Grey was scared, but she was mad, too. She said, "You can't push ME around!"

She took a great big breath and gave that cat her very meanest look. She growled, "RRROWL!"

"Grrrl??", the cat murmured. He backed up a little.

"RRROWL!!," Grey growled.

"Hnnl??," the cat whimpered.

"RRROWL!!!," Grey growled as loud as she could.

And all of a sudden that big, mean cat looked like a little scaredy-cat. It turned around and ran away from Grey as fast as it could run.

Grey was VERY proud of herself. She had a bad problem, but she solved it herself.

She crossed her arms and smiled to herself. "I'm still little, and sometimes I need help. But sometimes--," she said, "Sometimes I DON'T!"
