Egoism Individualism Sovereignty Splendor (These ideas are explicated in this sloppy manifesto) SplendorQuotes: Splendor is the interior experience of being so enthralled by the act of creating the values that contribute to and ultimately comprise your idealized perfect self that, while you are experiencing it, you are your idealized perfect self. Living is what you're doing when you're too enthralled to notice. Dying is what you're doing when all you can do is notice. Man is the only animal capable of comprehending what his life requires, and he is the only animal capable of failing to do what his life requires. Self-love is the joy and reverence you earn and deserve by the relentless pursuit of your deepest desire. Self-esteem is the high regard in which you presume to hold yourself in appreciation for the accomplishment of absolutely nothing. Defusing the darkness... Beck rages on about the encroaching dark, but I'm not going to quote from it or link to it because it doesn't actually matter. Still no argument, never any argument, never anything but one disconnected National Enquirer like incident after another. No matter what it says on the menu, the only dish served is Shit on a Shingle. Get used to it. Of course, there is no argument because there cannot be an argument. Beck understood that the idea of The End of History was stupid. He seems to be making a stout effort to fail to understand that a claim that the vector of history must pass through Point E (for Endarkenment) is equally stupid. History is made by the volition of individual people, and unavoidable necessity and volition are mutually-exclusive opposites. I know this because I lack conceptual clarity, or whatever is the flavor of the week. I will cite this, however. It seems Billy had a teacher who was astoundingly wrong about everything, except that he predicted that "our lives would be completely suffused with computers." Billy's take is that the man was, paradoxically, astoundingly right about this one thing. A better inference might be that his prediction was as inane as his every other pronouncement and that its being approximately correspondent to our present reality was a coincidence--an accident of idiocy. The point is that I see much of Billy's news-culling as also being the trumpeting of accidents of idiocy, meaningless noise in a marketplace of ideas where virtually everything is meaningless noise. In any case, no accumulation of incidents, no matter how vast, comprises an argument. And, as above, there cannot be an argument for unavoidable volitional human behavior. Working backwards, this all came to me because of an essay I wrote a long time ago called, Defusing the Unabomber. At the time I wrote it, I was interviewed by phone by USA Today. I was making the point that the Unabomber Manifesto meant nothing at all, that it was a declaration of surrender. The reporter asked, but what if he's right about this or that. I replied, "Even a broken clock is right twice a day." This if course is what got printed, alas. The point is that a clock, working or broken, is never right. It cannot reason, therefore it cannot be either right or wrong. To the extent that Beck's teacher and the other idiots with whom he bathes in bathos cannot reason, they are similarly if not equally irrelevant. The stupid will always be with us, and they will never, ever matter. The individual human mind is so much more nimble than massed stupidity that nothing else matters. Want proof? There is a piece evidence right before your eyes more potent than any ten thousand incidents Beck can cull from the National Enquirer: The ubiquitous microprocessor and all its astounding software.
